It means Google deems the other pages on your site relevant and worthy of a backlink to your top level domain. But how do you manipulate your own backlinks? The answer is: there is no 100% sure way of controlling which pages on your site Google will count as backlink. There are, however, many practices you can follow to ensure you have the best chance of obtaining a backlink from your own site. These include:
Include a Standard Navigation on every page
You should ensure that each page on your site includes your site's standard navigation. This will help to pass link juice between the pages, hence increasing the possibility of obtaining a backlink. You should ensure that keywords are included in the navigation to help push your rankings up for individual pages.
Ensure links can be read by Google
This sounds simple, but you need to ensure the links can be read and followed by Google. This means having HTML links and not links in JavaScript or Frames. Also avoid using images if possible as these pass less relevancy than anchor text links.
Obtain backlinks for inner pages
Once you have optimized your home page and recieved some return on investment, you should attempt to gather backlinks to your inner pages. For example, you could start an individual backlink campaign for your category pages. As these pages would link to your home page, you would increase the possibility of the link becoming a Google backlink. You should submit individual pages to relevant directories. For example, a page offering your service in Manchester could be added to a Manchester business directory.
Ensure inner pages are optimized and have unique content
Optimize your inner pages for your keywords and with unique content will also push these pages up in the search engines. This will increase the likelihood of obtaining one-way backlinks naturally. These pages of course link back to your home page, which again might result in a Google backlink.
Create a sitemap
You could create an SEO friendly sitemap. This sitemap should then be deeply linked to from the main navigation. This will again increase the probability of obtaining a backlink from one of the sitemap pages.
Although backlinks from your own site are not as powerful as links from other sites, they will help your site's performance in the search engines. It is important to remember that Google looks at individual pages as different sites. The above advice cannot guarantee you with a backlink from your own site, but should be implemented to give your site the best chance.
